The earliest angiosperms: Evidence from mitochondrial, plastid and nuclear genomes
Article Abstract:
Angiosperms provide much of our food, fibre, medicine and timber, although their origin and early evolution have remained enigmatic. A phylogentic analysis of DNA sequences of five mitochondrial, plastid and nuclear genes is reported, showing that Amborella, Nymphaeales and Illiciales-Trimeniaceae-Austrobaileya are the first stage of angiosperm evolution.

Angiosperm phylogeny inferred from multiple genes as a tool for comparative biology
Article Abstract:
The results of parsimony analyses of DNA sequences of plastid genes rbcL and atpB and the nuclear 18S rDNA for 560 species of angiosperms and seven non-flowering seed plants, are presented. A well-resolved and well-supported pylogenetic tree is shown for the angiosperms, that could be used in comparative biology.

Embryological evidence for developmental liability during early angiosperm evolution
Article Abstract:
A novel type of embryo sac in Amborella trichopoda, the sole member of the most ancient extant angiosperm lineage is reported. It is the first new pattern of embryo sac structure to be discovered among angiosperms in well over a half a century.
