The earliest memories of life on Earth
Article Abstract:
The rocks from the Itsaq Gneiss Complex in southern West Greenland contain deposits that indicate the existence of an ocean-like body and the presence of life 3.85 billion years (Gyr) ago. The 13C/12C ratio in the organic carbon present in these, matches that obtained from biotic components of sediments 2.7 Gyr to 3.5 Gyr old. The rocks are known to have experienced temperatures of 500 degree centigrade and pressures of 5,000 atmosphere during its metamorphosis. These conditions may have altered their isotopic composition, and the results should be taken with caution.

Ice sheets and sea level
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the annual snow accumulation rate and temperature variations from the GISP2 deep ice core in central Greenland indicates that mean temperature changes alone do not account for the varying snowfall rates. Such changes in snowfall rate can be a result of the behavioral changes of cyclones in the region, which are reflected by the dominant storm track. Atmospheric circulation changes are dominant over direct temperature effects in controlling snowfall rates.

Patterns of stress in crumpled sheets
Article Abstract:
Crumpling of thin elastic sheets is a frequent phenomenon experienced in everyday life, but little is known as to the behaviour of strongly deformed elastic sheets. Research shows that a network of narrow, stretching ridges contains most of the total elastic energy in a crumpled sheet. A new computer simulation demonstrates the formation of stretching ridges and predicts the distribution of curvature energy.
