The forest fragment classic
Article Abstract:
Ecologists attending a meeting in Brazil have discussed the results from 20 years of monitoring squares of 1 ha, 10 ha and 100 ha of rainforest preserved in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, as an international scheme between the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia and US-based partners. It was found that the diversity of euglossine, palms, dung beetles, shade-requiring butterflies, bees, primates, birds and termites all diminished in the rainforest fragments. In the smaller fragments, some species were lost only a few years after they became isolated.

Frog ponds and ocean iron
Article Abstract:
Fluctuations in the productivity of plants can result from changes in the food webs or chains present in an ecosystem. Mathew A. Leibold and Henry M. Wilbur experimented with tanks containing a variety of algae, zooplankton, phytoplankton and Rana tadpoles that resembled the species found in natural ponds. The researchers found that modifying the food web by boosting the level of nutrient available produced a concomitant rise in biomass variability and plant productivity so long as no more than two food chains were present.

Entrepreneurial insects
Article Abstract:
Research examining the expansion of four insects in Great Britain which have expanded their area of habitation due to climate warming is presented. Particular attention is given to butterflies which have changed their choice of plants to geranium. Larger implications of climate warming are stressed.
