The gaps between theory and practice in selecting nature reserves
Article Abstract:
Methods with great potential for identifying potentially valuable areas for nature reserves, but not much used, include gap analysis, reserve selection algorithms, and other computerized approaches. In the US and Europe land managers apparently have been unaware of them. Much effort, research, and money have gone into development of theory and methods to make conservation more efficient, and much recent emphasis has been on methods of identifying areas of high conservation interest and designing efficient networks of nature reserves. Using the methods developed would be helpful and a better dialog between practitioners and theoreticians might bring that about.

Dispersal in spatially explicit population models
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns the viability and output of spatially explicit animal population models, with regard to the input of varying dispersal success. The framework that is detailed provides a means of assessing the effect of differing dispersal success on forecasts of habitat occupancy and population viability.

Human population density and prediction of local plant extinction in Britain
Article Abstract:
The increase of common plants and the decrease in rare plants in Britain is an effect of human population density, itself a measure of human impact on the landscape. A 1997 study confirms the direct effect of human population density on the landscape on a regional scale. Urbanization is a threat to British wildlife.
