The long and the short of it
Article Abstract:
The enzyme double-stranded RNA deaminase (dsRAD) converts adenosine (A) to inosine (I) during RNA editing. The dsRAD is involved in the specific editing of A in the irregular and short double-stranded structures in the glutamate receptor-B mRNA and hepatitis delta virus antigenomic RNA. The results of the RNA editing differs between editing sites. There are other enzymes besides dsRAD that convert A to I, as screening of a rat cDNA library reveals a cDNA encoding a protein structurally similar to dsRAD.

A molecular contortionist
Article Abstract:
Scientists discussed latest insights into RNA structure at a meeting held in Jun 1997 at the University of California, Santa Cruz, CA. A key theme of this meeting was that metal ions are central to RNA structure and catalysis. It has been established, for example, that in the P4-P6 domain of the Tetrahymena self-splicing intron, a cluster of magnesium ions binds to phosphate oxygens and guanosine bases to create a structural core. There are still many unsolved issues relating to RNA structure.

Exploration by lamp light
Article Abstract:
In vitro formation of RNA which catalyzes bond forming reactions and the formation of a self-alkylating ribozyme shows that it is possible that in the beginning of evolution all reactions were catalyzed by RNA. The polyribonucleotides served as both the proteins and nucleic acids. RNA's with modified sugars and bases could have catalyzed the synthesis of active nucleosides.
