The phoenix effect
Article Abstract:
A spore-forming bacterium was found to escape from social collapse and extinction with a single mutation that has dramatic effect. It was this effect that led to the rapid dominance of the Phoenix mutant and one can speculate that it might also explain adaptations that police cheating in other societies.

Clusters of ant colonies and robust criticality in a tropical agroecosystem
Article Abstract:
The formation of clusters of ant colonies and groups by the common species of a tropical agroecosystem is discussed. The sizes of these clusters are found to fall off as a power law, exhibiting a robust critical state.
