The role of grunts in reconciling opponents and facilitating interactions among adult female baboons
Article Abstract:
The grunt of the female baboon are used to restore relationships within the baboon's society's hierarchy after attempts at usurping power have been made. A study found that more dominant baboons would grunt when approaching a less dominant baboon who had earlier tried to challenge the more dominant animal. This grunt appears to be a sign of reconciliation, meant to ease the fear of the lower-ranking baboon in the presence of the higher ranking female.
