The smack of firm government
Article Abstract:
The British government's White Paper on research policy provides guidelines for promoting result-oriented research programs. The government will allocate funds for specific programs with the stipulation that research scholars concentrate on the fields specified. The phrasing of the paper suggests that apart from providing the framework, the government will not interfere in the scholars' research work. Technology foresight, the technique by which the importance of a research project is decided, needs to be clearly defined.

Another election soon
Article Abstract:
The British government's poor support for science and the resulting demoralization among academics and researchers may become prominent as campaign issues if the Apr 9, 1992 election is indecisive and another election is necessary. Both the Conservative and Labour parties failed to address the issue of science in the current campaign. Department of Education and Science minister Allan Haworth gave voice to the prevailing complacency with his statement that nothing is wrong with British research.

Tasks for a British science adviser
Article Abstract:
Professor Robert May is to take over as the chief scientific advisor to the British government. This is unlikely to have an impact on the opposition to the transfer of the office of Science and Technology from the Cabinet Office to the Department of Trade and Industry. This administrative change is a step by the government to take control of all research supported by government departments. May's challenge is to facilitate communication and coordination among the various research departments.
