The stem-cell niche as an entity of action
Article Abstract:
Niches are stem-cell populations are established in specific anatomic locations that regulate participation in tissue generation maintenance and repair. The niche saves stem cells from depletion, while protecting the cells from over-exuberant stem-cell proliferation, constitutes basic unit of tissue physiology, integrating signals that mediate the balanced response of stem cells to the needs of organisms.

In vivo imaging of specialized bone marrow endothelial microdomains for tumour engraftment
Article Abstract:
The study shows that bone marrow contains unique anatomic regions defined by specialized endothelium using dynamic in vivo confocal imaging. This vasculature expresses the adhesion molecule E-selectin and the chemottractant stormal-cell-derived factor 1 in discrete, discontinuous areas that influence the homing of a variety of tumour cell lines.

Stem cell engraftment at the endosteal niche is specified by the calcium-sensing receptor
Article Abstract:
Cells respond to extra-cellular ionic calcium concentrations through the seven-transmembrane-spanning calcium-sensing receptor (CaR) as being expressed on haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The CaR has a function in retaining HSCs in close physical proximity to the endosteal surface and the regulatory niche components associated with it.
