Tight deadlines and data gaps fan fight on pesticide safety
Article Abstract:
The Food Quality and Protection Act (FQPA) was supposed to improve disputes over the Delaney clause, which banned food additives found to cause cancer in animals. Re-assessment of uses for hundreds of pesticides must be undertaken, with the current priority on organophosphates. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wants to see the act implemented, but farm groups and chemical manufacturers are concerned that the EPA will ban or restrict the use of such pesticides.

Malaria breakthrough raises spectre of drug resistance
Article Abstract:
The miracle malaria drug artemisinin is being produced plentifully and cheaply and brings hope to areas such as sub-Saharan Africa, where those who need the drug most can afford it. The prospect of plentiful artemisinin is encouraging, but if the parasite becomes resistant, increased drug production will be worthless and the main way to stop resistance arising is to always give the drug in combination with others.

Astronomy adapts to sharpen up its image
Article Abstract:
Astronomers will start using the Keck Observatory's adaptive optics (AO) system. The system corrects for atmospheric turbulence by sensing light distortion. Keck II is the largest single telescope in the world, and other large instruments will begin using AO systems, such as the Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, and the Multiple Mirror Telescope in Arizona.
