UK goes for 'generic priorities' in bid to boost science/industry links
Article Abstract:
The UK will forge closer ties between the scientific community and the industrial sector to stimulate technological innovation. Prime Minister John Major announced at a London press conference his endorsement of various initiatives offered by government agencies. Science minister David Hunt said that the government will spend 40 million pounds sterling during the coming 1995-1999 period to support research efforts that address the issues brought up in the Technology Foresight program. The Dept. of Trade and Industry has also announced an additional 70 pounds sterling to finance other activities that focus on technological innovations.

Faraday Centres appear doomed by Lords' panel
Article Abstract:
The House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology has suggested that a proposed network of institutions designed to link academic science and industrial research in the UK is not necessary. A pilot program for the so-called Faraday Centres has been conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) which enables five existing research programs to take on 20 graduate students each, but DTI will make no further commitment under its current budget pressures. The Committee argued that the Faraday Centres would duplicate the work of corporate research laboratories.

Britain rediscovers industry-academia links
Article Abstract:
The UK's Department of Trade and Industry lifted a temporary freeze on the LINK program, which was established in 1986 to bridge the gap between the academic community and industry. Bureaucratic rules and complex review procedures hampered the implementation of the program, culminating in its temporary freeze in 1992. The program is one of the Conservative government's successful initiatives, having spawned 300 projects covering 30 programs ranging from protein engineering to biological treatment of water and soil.
