US Senate gets tough on animal activists
Article Abstract:
A juvenile crime bill passed by the US Senate in late May 1999 includes stricter federal penalties for attacks by animal-rights activists. Those who attack animal facilities and cause more than $10,000 worth of damage could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and fined up to double the cost of the damage caused. This amendment makes the criminal penalties in the Animal Enterprise Protection Act of 1992 stricter. Animal-rights activists state that the stricter legislation will not deter those opposed to research on animals.

Higher status for 'research risks' office?
Article Abstract:
It is being considered whether the Office for Protection from Research Risks (OPRR) should remain in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or be moved to the office of the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS). The office's elevation to the DHHS is likely to be recommended. A six-member panel is considering the issue and will also have to decide whether the office requires more authority to ensure compliance with regulations protecting animal and human subjects by institutions and government workers.

US faces increasing demand for funds to replace ageing equipment
Article Abstract:
The biological science community in the US is suffering from a severe shortage of up-to-date equipment. Laboratories are unable to update their equipment using funds from individual investigator grants managed by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Investigators are therefore being forced to take an innovative approach to funding equipment purchases, bringing together federal funds from a range of sources.
