Ultraviolet colour variation influences blue tit sex ratios
Article Abstract:
Research among a wild population of blue tits, Parus caeruleus, has produced experimental evidence that females shift the sex ratio of their young in response to the ultraviolet plumage orientation of their mates. This research supports existing experimental evidence that female birds are able to control the primary sex ratio of their young, but shows an unusually high level of control. It seems that the ultraviolet colour signal itself acts as an indicator of male phenotypic quality in blue tits. This backs up other evidence indicating that this is a target of female choice.

Environmental determination of a sexually selected trait
Article Abstract:
A population of house sparrows on Lundy island was studied between 1995 and 1996. Cross fostering experiments were used to examine the inheritance of the black throat patch of male sparrows. The results showed that non-genetic factors may be significant, and in agreement with the concept that expression of certain sexual ornaments is determined by environmental factors, or by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors.
