Uncertainty and the management of mallard harvests
Article Abstract:
The management of waterfowl harvests must take into account the uncertainty of environmental variations. Such uncertainty has been dealt with in the past through managers developing practices based on deterministic predictions. A more useful solution is stochastic dynamic programming, but it requires managers to have clear objectives, a mathematical representation of the managed system and a range of rules. The use of dynamic programming as part of an optimum harvest strategy for mallard ducks is presented.

Evaluation of waterfowl conservation under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan
Article Abstract:
The North American Waterfowl Management Plan was initiated in 1986 with the remit of providing and coordinating waterfowl conservation in North America. The evaluation of the plan has been under-researched, despite the fact that its delivery can be improved if there is a better understanding of the effect of habitat conservation on waterfowl population dynamics. It is difficult to understand how the plan can be effectively delivered if proper monitoring is absent.

Uncertainty and the adaptive management of waterfowl harvests
Article Abstract:
The lack of understanding regarding the ecological relationship between harvest and biological processes of survival creates the uncertainty in waterfowl management. This led to the creation of the adaptive management approach which looks into the sources of uncertainty, factors these in in an adaptive harvest management model, comes up with a monitoring system and uses this to read the population status.
