University equipment fund meets with mixed reaction
Article Abstract:
The UK government has introduced two programs intended to help universities fund the maintenance of their research facilities. It is allotting 18 million pounds sterling for the two schemes, one of which is for research equipment costing below 250,000 pounds, while the other is for equipment costing more than this amount. Under both schemes, the grants coming from the government will have to be equally matched by the private sector. The university community welcomes the introduction of the new programs, but claim that the amount of funding they offer is insufficient.

Survey finds that restructuring has improved UK university research
Article Abstract:
The UK Universities Funding Council has found that the recent mergers and closures of many science departments in British universities has led to an improvement in research quality. A study of 172 institutions was conducted to determine how research grants should be allocated in the coming year. Those who conducted the study attribute the improvement, as measured by panels of experts reviewing publications, to the efficiency gained by shutting down departments that scored low in a previous study.

Britain finds way round impact of falling pound
Article Abstract:
The Sep 1992 devaluation of the pound will not have the disastrous impact widely believed to be inevitable on Britain's participation in the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). British space officials will face a 7 million pound increase in their ESA membership costs, about a third of the projected increase, and the CERN subscription has been reduced to 3 million pounds from the previously expected 57 million pounds.
