Unmasking the killer's accomplice
Article Abstract:
Major histo-compatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules are polymorphic glycoproteins which are expressed on the surface of most cells in the body. They can be downregulated upon viral infection or in tumour cells, and the absence is sensed by natural killer (NK) cells. Natural killer cells monitor class I molecule expression using cell-surface receptors, and molecular cloning of the receptors show remarkable diversity. Lanier and colleagues have identified a complementary DNA encoding a molecule linked with one activating NK-cell receptor.

TREM-1 amplifies inflammation and is a crucial mediator of septic shock
Article Abstract:
Research into the role of TREM-1 (the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells) is discussed. TREM-1 is an activating receptor of the immuno-globulin superfamily. TREM-1 amplifies inflammatory responses and could potentially be used in the treatment of septic shock.
