Use of visual cover by domestic fowl: a Venetian blind effect?
Article Abstract:
Domestic fowl may use cover as a shelter from weather or from predators, and cover may form a barrier which impedes movement. Fowl were offered four types of cover varying from transparent through stripes to complete cover. The fowl preferred to use cover and were more likely to rest or preen themselves when under cover. Concealment appears to lie behind the preference for cover. The fowl showed a preference for stripes giving 67% cover and this could be because they were using cover as though it were venetian blinds.

The function of vigilance in sympatric marsupial carnivores: the eastern quoll and the Tasmanian devil
Article Abstract:
The vigilance behavior of the easter quoll, Dasyurus viverrinus, a small predator, and the Tasmanian devil, Sarcophilus laniarus, a competitor and potential predator of quolls, is monitored. Results reveal that quolls are more vigilant in the presence of Tasmanian devils, the vigilance of Tasmanian devils is inversely related to age and size, and resource investment to vigilance is much higher in quolls which trade off feeding disruption for better visibility in assuming vigilance postures.
