Using hair to screen for breast cancer
Article Abstract:
Hair from breast cancer patients has been found to have a different intermolecular structure from hair from healthy subjects. This changed structure is also seen in women who test positive for a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which is linked with a raised risk of breast cancer. This research, undertaken using fibre X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation, may lead to the development of a simple, non-invasive screening method for breast cancer.

Papillomavirus and p53
Article Abstract:
Most cases of cervical cancer and some kinds of perianal, penile and vulval cancers, are linked to specific types of human papillomavirus (HPV). New research shows that a sequence polymorphism in the p53 protein influences an individual's susceptibility to HPV-induced cervical cancer. It is concluded that patients with the arginine form of p53 are seven times more susceptible to cervical cancer than those with the proline form of p53.
