Views collide over fate of accelerator
Article Abstract:
Researchers and local activists are at debating over the fate of the Bevatron, one of the most important particle accelerators ever built on the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's campus in Berkeley, California. The city council's Landmarks and Preservation Commission has voted to recognize the Bevatron's legacy without protecting the building and the lab is preparing the environmental-impact statement required to proceed with the demolition.

That's no laser, it's a particle accelerator
Article Abstract:
Israeli physicists have converted a laser into a particle accelerator, dubbed a paser, which would accelerate bundles of electrons using the same principle as a laser. The device, which can currently accelerate electrons by about 0.15% of their initial speed, could lead to the development of compact particle accelerators and table-top X-ray devices.

Revamped accelerator seeks quark's secrets
Article Abstract:
Cornell University's (Ithaca, New York) Cornell Electron Storage Ring, a particle-physics laboratory, will receive federal funds to research the charm quark, one of the six quarks featured in physicists' standard model. Discusses the research, accompanied by photographs of the facility.
