Voluminous volcanism on early Mars revealed in Valles Marineris
Article Abstract:
North-south-trending image strips over parts of the Valles Marineris canyon system were obtained by the Mars Orbiter Camera. They revealed ubiquitous horizontal layering at depths of 8 km, suggesting that volcanic or sedimentary processes were a more important part of early martian history than previously thought. Volcanic flood lavas are thought to be the main process leading to the formation of the layers, meaning that Mars could have been volcanically active in the first billion years.

Evidence for recent volcanism on Mars from crater counts
Article Abstract:
Images from the Mars Orbiter Camera on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft show crater populations extending the size distribution down to around 16 m. The results suggest a broad range of surface ages. Lava flows within the Arsia Mons caldera are estimated to be no more than 40-100 million years old, and it is suggested that on Mars, volcanism is a continuing process.

Groundwater formation of martian valleys
Article Abstract:
Images from the Mars Orbiter Camera have revealed new information about the valleys that could have been formed by fluid erosion. The branching valley networks are smaller than the outflow channels and their origins and ages have previously been controversial. It is believed that the fluid undertaking the erosion was water, probably ground water.
