A number of animal rights measures are up for balloting on Nov 3, 1998. The elections allow voters to decide on crucial issues regarding wildlife protection. Some of the issues include the use of steel traps in Minnesota and mountain lion hunting in California.

Issues concerning the treatment of elephants in circuses in the US are discussed. Cases of maltreatment by circus trainers are highlighted and moves by local lawmakers and members of Congress to ban exotic animal circuses are examined.
