Wang goes bust: the bankruptcy of Wang Laboratories is sad - and confirmation that even the best cannot stand still
Article Abstract:
Computer firm Wang Laboratories Inc went bankrupt in Aug 1992 due chiefly to the decision to control products at all levels including research, manufacturing and marketing. This attempt to make Wang an integrated company caused the firm to react too slowly to rapidly improving computer technology including the introduction of microprocessors in the 1970s. Hence Wang's commitment to obsolescent products helped to bring on the loss of $385 million in 1991 and of $130 million in the financial year ending in Jun 1992 that were the immediate causes of the bankruptcy.

Jobs in the computer industry
Article Abstract:
The computer and information technology industries will continue to recruit new graduates with computer science degrees despite the recession and the lowering of the industries' confidence. Industry leader IBM and lesser companies will always require new programmers, but job-seekers should remember that no one qualification will ensure a successful interview. Demonstrated ability counts more than academic work, with challenging vacation work being a good way of obtaining the experience for which the industry is looking.

Cruel innovation
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM) and International Business Machine Inc (IBM) have both suffered decline since the 1960s. GM has always maintained a high level of technical excellence, but it did not accurately predict the effect of foreign competition on its domestic market. IBM, on the other hand, should have split in the 1970s and pursued both mainframe and personal computer markets. Complacency rather than size or longevity has been their main foe.
