Watch and learn: Preview of the fighting ability of opponents alters contest behaviour in rainbow trout
Article Abstract:
If animals could assess the fighting ability of potential future opponents with a preview of their contest success against other individuals, the costs of initial conflicts could be reduced. This hypothesis was tested on juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. It was predicted that observers would resolve conflicts with previewed opponents faster and with less aggression than with unfamiliar fish, which was supported for observers losing against previewed competitors.

Big and brave: size selection affects foraging under risk of predation in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss
Article Abstract:
Large body-size selection of juvenile rainbow trout in a predator-free environment increases their chances to forage under the threat of predation. Larger trout dominate over smaller trout and maintain their social status by monopolizing food supply. This forces the small trout to seek food in adverse conditions. Similar-sized dominant and subordinate trout are take risks, in contrast to small trouts, although large and small trouts are equally susceptible to predators.

Statistics and biological sense: a reply to Thomas & Juanes
Article Abstract:
Len Thomas and Francis Juanes correctly assert that some biological significance cannot be identified through statistical testing. In their example, the researchers correctly conclude that the absence of a significant effect may be due to the low sample size. However, their dismissal of the possibility that no real difference between susceptibility to predation of both large and small trout is incorrect.
