Wellcome and Zeneca form genetic alliance
Article Abstract:
The Wellcome Trust, Zeneca and the University of Oxford have singed a three-way agreement for collaboration on research into multifactorial genetic diseases. The three will research the genetics of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Zeneca will finance the research to be conducted at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and in return it can commercially utilize any drug that results from the joint effort. More than a hundred researchers from Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Trust will benefit from the agreement but researchers will be under pressure to perform because finances are linked to achieving formal milestones.

Wellcome sets sequencing project in motion
Article Abstract:
The Wellcome Trust of Britain will finance a program for sequencing of the complete human genome by 2002. One sixth of the work is being undertaken by the Sanger Center, at Hinxton Hall near Cambridge. The estimated cost is fifty million pounds for 500 million base pairs at the rate of 0.10 pounds per base pair. The amount of the grant will ensure 99.9% accuracy of genome mapping. International participating groups, and not the funding agency, will draft the strategy for the research at the Sanger Center.

Wellcome Trust to launch transfer company
Article Abstract:
The Wellcome Trust has proposed a technology-transfer company to help its scientists in finding commercial outlets for their research results. The decision stems from guidelines from Charity Commissioners, which state that charities should ensure the appropriate use of their research funds. The decision is also in response to scientists' plea that universities conducting the technology-transfer programs do not provide adequate support.
