White House cool on obtaining human embryonic stem cells
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration has distanced itself from an imminent recommendation that the government should fund derivation and research use of human embryonic stem cells. The National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) has finalized its report to President Bill Clinton on the ethics of stem-cell research. The administration would have to lobby Congress to liberalize the law that bans government funding of research where the embryos are destroyed or discarded, if it were to embrace the recommendations.

Ethicists urge funding for extraction of embryo cells
Article Abstract:
It is likely that a US presidential commission will recommend that government should pay for research on stem cells from human embryos as well as for the process of extractions. This is likely to cause more debate and controversy and is conflict with current legislation that bans the government from funding research where human embryos are destroyed or discarded.

Stem-cell fudge finds no favour with biologists
Article Abstract:
A compromise solution to the US government's funding of research on human embryonic stem cells has been proposed. However, cell biologists have questioned the value of access only to existing stem cell lines.
