Winter behavior of desert tortoises in southcentral Nevada
Article Abstract:
The endangered desert tortoise is threatened in some parts of its range and the law requires that ground-disturbing activities are preceded by their daily removal from construction or search sites. A knowledge of when the tortoises hibernate would mean that daily monitoring is unnecessary. A new study monitors the behaviour of radiomarked tortoises at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, to determine their movements during hibernation. Observations show that 98% of desert tortoises are inactive between 15 Nov and 15 Mar, therefore daily monitoring can probably be postponed until March in most cases.

Genetic structure and evidence of a local bottleneck in moose in Sweden
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted in Sweden to ascertain the socioeconomical and biological importance as well as genetic variability of moose, a popular game species. Evidence emerged that hunting pressure might have an effect on genetic diversity and control needs to be maintain to ensure that specific species are not over hunted.
