World Bank renews its support for Brazil
Article Abstract:
Brazil's Programme of Support for Scientific and Technological Development (PADCT) has become a key source of funding for many research teams undertaking pioneering work. The third phase of PADCT has now been approved by the World Bank. This phase will initially cost $360 million, with the Brazilian government and the World Bank each contributing $155 million and the private sector $50 million. Brazil's science budget looks good - on paper
Article Abstract:
The $1 billion dollar budget assigned to Brazil's Ministry of Science and Technology for 1993 masks the government's continuing failure to support science. The budget is but a meager portion of the country's gross national product and is not enough to support the ministry's projects. Furthermore, the allocation of the entire amount is not yet assured and the ministy might again be forced to depend on state companies and banks for funding.
