Yeast DNA ligase IV mediates non-homologous DNA end joining
Article Abstract:
Researchers have shown that the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has two typical DNA ligases. These are the DNA ligase IV homologue DNL4, which was previously unknown, and the DNA ligase I homologue CDC9, which was already known. It can be concluded that DNL4 is the ligase which usually functions downstream of the Ku proteins HDF1 and KU80 in both precise and end-processed non-homologous double-strand end joining reactions. Yeast therefore has two functionally separate pathways for DNA ligation.

Extent to which homology can constrain coding exon junctional diversity in V(D)J recombination
Article Abstract:
The diversity of coding joints in V(D)J recombination can be restricted when the coding ends in the reaction have short homologous regions. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase reduces the constraint. Restricted diversity seems to help protect against phosphocholine-bearing pathogens, though increased diversity is eventually beneficial. The protection mechanism has implications for the immune repertoire in general.

The most common chromosomal abnormality in human cancer is the reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 14 and 18, which occurs in follicular lymphomas. Purified DNA structure, which contains stable regions of single-strandedness, corresponds well to the translocation regions in patients.
