Fabric architecture
Article Abstract:
Architect Todd Dalland used doubly-curved surfaces and forms for fashion designer Carmelo Pomodoro's showroom. Triangular shaped canopies and two slightly bowed wood walls designate the clothing display area. Fluorescent lighting fixtures also have curved mesh shades while display tables have elliptical glass tops. The materials used were also maintained in their natural state with only slight enhancements. The wood works were stained to show the grain while the steel works were buffed and lacquered.

Sound sense
Article Abstract:
The Russ Berger Design Group was commissioned by audio-video post-production group GTN to build a sound-proof building near a bulldozer testing facility. The design firm achieved soundproofing by locating the building on solid soil aggregates and incorporating special footing to withstand the vibration. In addition, the building was built with two concrete slab walls, mounted on concrete slabs with the walls separated by an air gap.

Design for disassembly
Article Abstract:
Polymer Solutions has embarked on research intended to find ways to create product designs which are easy to disassemble. The company believes that products which can be taken apart are more likely to be recycled. A tea kettle and a leaf shredder designed according to the disassembly philosophy are already available in the market. A recyclable plastic refrigerator is already in the prototype stage, along with other products.
