Diaghilev in Perm
Article Abstract:
Dancer Serge Diaghilev grew up in the Soviet city of Perm. While the city was once off limits to foreigners and surrounded by penal colonies, it once boasted an opera house, chamber orchestra, and many musically talented citizens. Diaghilev's family helped build the opera house which, by the 1870s, staged full scale performances. Diaghilev was deeply affected when many of his family members were killed in the Russian Revolution. Although he lived in Europe and maintained the veneer of a sophisticate, Diaghilev was deeply attuned to Russian life and art.
