Interpreting Jean Borlin's 'Dervishes': masculine subjectivity and the queer male dancing body
Article Abstract:
The article discusses the relationship of late 19th century medical ideas about homosexuality and the avant-garde performance practices as they occur in the early part of the 20th century in the ballet 'Dervishes' by the Swedish choreographer Jean Borlin. It is not a coincidence that Borlin, himself a gay man, choreographed in this ballet an affirmative representation freedom, which in other contexts society was denying to those they viewed as perverts.

Jean Borlin as dancer and choreographer
Article Abstract:
The article gives a testimonial to Jean Borlin, a dancer and choreographer in Rolf de Mare's Ballets Suedois, the company providing the greatest challenge to the Diaghilev Ballets Russes from 1920 to 1925. The author concludes that Borlin's choreography grew from what he did for himself, and that his ways of selecting movement became a frequent compositional technique that made the repertoire distinct.
