Alex Zanardi emerged as the winner during the PPG CART World Series at Elkhart Lake, WI, and Lexington, OH. Zanardi attributes his victory to teamwork, which he rated at 150%, and to a bit of luck. During the race, Mark Blundell's engine blew which made it easier for Zanardi to win.

A slate of new car racing driver aspirants are joining the rookies who are competing for the 1998 Winston Cup. Three in particular are expected to make it big in future car racing events. They are Kenny Irwin, Jerry Nadeau and Steve Park.

Zanardi's second, Herta's first

Zanardi won his second championship at the 1998 CART event while Herta scored his first championship at Laguna Seca. A week earlier they both suffered losses from Dario Franchitti who won the Vancouver race.
