Dutchman Arie Luyendyk decided to retire because he had already achieved his goal of winning in Indianapolis a second time. Several incidents where he was a victim of other racing drivers' accidents made him decide that Indianapolis would be an excellent site to end his career.

PPG CART World Series: new finale for 1997

The 1997 PPG CART World Series was dominated by newcomers. Greg Moore became the youngest winner in CART history and Mark Blundell earned his first CART win ever. Both drivers were aboard Mercedes Benz Reynard 971's.
