The first automotive computers were used in engine design in the 1980s. Computer control of transmissions enabled the development of automatic transmissions with manual control. Suspension control, including the 1995 Lincoln Continental Vehicle Dynamics Module, is also being computerized.

Stratus Super Tourer: a stock car actually designed and built by stock engineers
Article Abstract:
The Dodge Stratus Super Touring project, run by Chrysler VP of vehicle engineering Francois Castaing, is unusual. Most automobile companies do not actually build their own stock cars. Castaing states that engineers learn a great deal from building one.

The service grifters
Article Abstract:
The service departments of automobile dealers often perform maintenance tasks that are not required by manufacturers. This results in service fees that are higher than normal. Owners manuals should be consulted to determine services that are required.
