The high quality of Japanese cars has forced US automobile manufacturers to develop better products. The US automobile industry's increasing use of teamwork has also improved the quality of US cars. Japanese automobile makers claim they want to cut costs without harming product quality.

California law requires that at least 2% of the cars sold by automobile makers should be electric cars by the year 1998. Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors are scrambling to develop electric models that will be ready for production by 1998.
