3-methylindole (skatole) and indole production by mixed productions of pig fecal bacteria
Article Abstract:
L-tryptophan conversion to indole or 3-methylindole (skatole) by the bacterial population in the large intestines of pigs was examined. In vitro study of pig fecal slurries revealed an indole-3-acetate intermediate in the production of 3-methylindole and a highest rate of production at pH 6.5. At pH 5.0, 3-methylindole was the product of 80% of tryptophan conversion. At pH 8.0, indole constituted 85% of the product. The two pathways had similar maximum rates and tryptophan Km values.

Acid tolerance of biofilm cells of Streptococcus mutans
Article Abstract:
The acid tolerance response (ATR) and ATR-inducing ability of the biofilm cells of Streptococcus mutans are explained. The results show that different strains of Streptococcus mutans possess different degrees of acid tolerance and ability to induce ATR.
