A comparison of anthropometric indices of nutritional status of Tukanoan and Achuar Amerindians
Article Abstract:
This article compares the anthropometric data of the Achuar population in the Ecuadorian Amazon to the Tukanoan population of the Vaupes region of Colombia; the Achuar inhabit a mountain ecosystem, whereas the Tukanoan inhabit a blackwater ecosystem. Results suggesting the nutritional status included the greater degree of stunting in the Tukanoans who were significantly shorter than the Achuar, they were also leaner, showing more wasting, and finally the Tukanoans also exhibited lower upper arm muscle area suggesting leaner body mass.
