A requirement for Flk1 in primitive and definitive hematopoieses and vasculogenesis
Article Abstract:
Research on the importance of receptor tyrosine kinase (Flk1) in embryos shows that mouse embryos with inadequate Flk1 die with underdeveloped endothelial and hematopoietic cells. Thus, Flk1 plays a vital role in hematopoiesis and vasculogenesis. To further understand the essentiality of Flk1, the developmental capability of Flk-I- embryonic stem cells in chimeras is examined and the result has showed that Flk1-I- is needed in endothelial development. However, these cells have no effects in the early hematopoiesis in chimeric yolk sacks and definitive hematopoiesis in adult chimeras and chimeric fetal liver.

Article Abstract:
Intercelluar communication must be present for creation of the mesodermal germ layer and for division into distinct subpopulations. Specific mutations in the Fgfr1 locus in mice were introduced by gene targeting and studied relative to functions of fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR1). Opposite phenotypes of hypomorphic and Y766 phosphorylation site mutations show a function for Fgfr1 in anteroposterior patterning of mouse embryos.

Jak2 deficiency defines an essential developmental checkpoint in definitive hematopoiesis
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the role of Janus kinases (Jaks) in signal transduction via cytokine and growth factor receptors. This involved the inactivation of the Jak2 protein. Results revealed the existence of primitive erythrocytes and multilineage hematopoietic stem cells and the corresponding absence of definitive erythropoiesis and fetal liver colonies. These indicated the pivotal role of Jaks in definitive hematopoiesis.
