A subtle defect underlies altered lamellar orientation in the Gr16 chorion mutant of Bombyx mori
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on Gr16 effects on chorion ultrastructure protein composition, protein synthesis patterns and on the chorion locus structure at the genetic level. The inner lamellae of mature chorions were found to have a perpendicular orientation relative to the egg surface and had a small vertical zone surrounded by normally oriented lamellae in the heterozygote. Identical mature chorion patterns were observed in mutant, wild-type and heterozygouse samples, except only for a set of early protein doublets with different isoelectric points. It was suggested that Gr16 affects the structure of a minor chorion or follicular cell component which contributes to the determination of lamellar orientation.

Neurons and ecdysteroids promote the proliferation of myogenic cells cultured from the developing adult legs of Manduca sexta
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms underlying the neuromuscular interactions during embryonic development of larval muscles were investigated using a nerve/muscle coculture system of the hawkmoth, Manduca sexta. Muscle precursor cells cultured in the presence of neurons exhibited a spindle-like structure and formed multinucleate contractile myotubes. Cell proliferation assay revealed a fast rate of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation into myonuclei, suggesting that neurons enhanced myogenic cell proliferation. However, enhanced BrdU incorporation was observed only in regions of physical overlap between neurons and muscle precursor cells. Cultures containing neurons alone exhibited no such effect.
