Activity and distribution of methane-oxidizing bacteria in flooded rice soil microcosms and in rice plants (Oryza sativa)
Article Abstract:
The activity and distribution of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in flooded rice (Oryza sativa) soil microcosms were studied. Methane oxidation was found to take place in undisturbed microcosms by employing 14CH4, and model computations revealed that almost 90% of the oxidation had occurred at a depth where only roots could provide the needed O2. The average number of MOB in homogenized roots was larger than on the rhizoplane and increased with plant age. MOB was also observed in surface-sterilized roots and basal culms.

Article Abstract:
Two layers, a partially oxic and totally anoxic lower layer were analyzed to determine the effect of oxygen gradients on both the microbial and protistan communities. Although detectable in lower anoxic layer, grazing effects were to a great extent obvious in the partially oxic surface layer.

Changes in activity and community structure of methane-oxidizing bacteria over the growth period of rice
Article Abstract:
Most methanotrophs are relatively stable during the growth period of rice, with the exception of the genus Methylobacter. The amount of methanotroph activity was greatest in the rhizoplane of the rice plants.
