Activity and three-dimensional distribution of toluene-degrading Pseudomonas putida in a multispecies biofilm assessed by quantitative in situ hybridization and scanning confocal laser microscopy
Article Abstract:
Toluene-degrading Pseudomonas putida shows reduced activity in the biofilm environment, but is responsible for 65% of the toluene degradation by the entire toluene-degrading community in a biofilter for waste gas treatment. The fully hydrated biofilm has a highly heterogeneous structure, and the cell-free channels extend from the biofilm surface into the matrix. This indicates that toluene reaches deep into the biofilm and gets degraded by P. putida which is present throughout the biofilm matrix.

Identification of bacteria in biofilm and bulk water samples from a nonchlorinated model drinking water distribution system: Detection of a large nitrite-oxidizing population associated with Nitrospira spp
Article Abstract:
The identification of bacterial community from bulk water and biofilm samples by a phylogenetic analysis of rRNA genes amplified from directly extracted DNA and colonies formed on R2A plates are described. The findings suggest that microbial communities in water distribution systems might control against elevated nitrite concentrations, but also contain large indigenous populations that are capable of assisting the depletion of disinfection agents like chloramines.

Long-term succession of structure and diversity of a biofilm formed in a model drinking water distribution system
Article Abstract:
The long-term development of the overall structural morphology and community composition of the biofilm formed in a model drinking water distribution system with biofilms from 1 day to 3 years old is examined. The results indicate a baseline for the spatial and temporal variations in a biofilm and provide a reference for further studies investigating factors influencing the microbial community in a water distribution system.
