Alternative strategies for becoming an insider: lessons from the bacterial world
Article Abstract:
Evolutionary forces that have operated over a long period to give microbial pathogens sophisticated strategies to get around cellular functions of vertebrate hosts are discussed in this minireview article. The study of pathogen/host cell interactions is bringing out useful lessons on inner cell workings. Topics include internalin and related proteins; a family of Listeria monocytogenes determinants that mediate entry into nonphagocytic cells; phosphoinositide (PI)-3 kinase and signaling for entry; E-cadherin, the InIA receptor; and receptors for InIB.

Temporal regulation of Salmonella virulence effector function by proteasome-dependent protein degradation
Article Abstract:
Research shows that the activities of the bacterial type III protein secretion systems effector protein, important for virulence of bacterial pathogens, are temporally regulated within host cells by virtue of protein's ability to differentially adjust its stability, as exemplified by Salmonella virulence effector.

What's critical for the critical period in visual cortex?
Article Abstract:
This review presents recent research on critical period or unique time and its influence on visual systems of vertebrates in vertebrate brain development. Molecular mechanisms regulating critical periods are discussed in relation to visual systems of cat and mouse and their responses to monocular deprivation.
