Aromatic-degrading Sphingomonas isolates from the deep subsurface
Article Abstract:
The strain F199 and five other strains of the aerobic chemoheterotrophic bacteria found in the American Southeast Coastal Plain subsurface sediments have been included in the genus Sphingomonas on the basis of their 16S rRNA sequence and the presence of shingolipids. Although these strains resemble S. capsulata, differences in the 16S rRNA sequences and the lipid composition suggest that these strains belong to a new species. Except for strain B0477, all the other strains can degrade many aromatic compounds including both toluene and napthalene.

Production of the gram-positive Sarcina ventriculi pyruvate decarboxylase in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates the cloning for the first time of the pdc gene, encoding pyruvate decarboxylase, from Sarcina ventriculi in Escherichia coli. Data indicate that pdc gene codes for a homo-tetramer of 58 kilodalton subunits of the enzyme.
