Researchers describe four recombinant variants resulting from the infection of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis NCK203 (Abi+) with phage phi31. This bacteriophage can acquire new DNA from the bacterial cell that can make them resistant to phage defense mechanisms.

Article Abstract:
The lytic P335-type bacteriophage of Lactococcus lactis appears to have evolved from a temperate bacteriophage. It has extensive DNA and protein sequence homology to other temperate phages of Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus. This illustrates the transfer of DNA cassettes among bacteria involved in the dairy fermentation industry.

Differentation of two abortive mechanisms by using monclonal antibodies directed toward lactococcal bacteriophage capsid proteins
Article Abstract:
The quantification of the intracellular effect of an abortive defense mechanism on phage protein production is discussed. A sandwichenzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) was usedin the quantitative assessment of two abortive phage resistance mechanisms. Theutility of using MAbs to variouse phage structural problems for subequent studies on abortive defense mechanism was demonstrated.
