Astrovirus survival in drinking water
Article Abstract:
The survival of astroviruses in natural and chlorinated drinking water is studied. The viruses are detected using CaCo-2 cell infection and the screening of specific RNA by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Astroviruses cause diarrhea and acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis in children. The usual transmission mode is via the fecal-to-oral route from contaminated drinking water in places where incidents of gastroenteritis have been reported.

Isolation and identification of Helicobacter spp. from canine and feline gastric mucosa
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of an isolation technique for canine and feline gastric Helicobacters. The prevalence and distribution of taxa in the samples were also examined, including the efficacy of a set of standardized conventional phenotypic tests. Results indicated that a variety of Helicobacter species can be determined from gastric biopsy samples with appropriate isolation procedures.

Elimination of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) type B from drinking water by small-scale (personal-use) water purification devices and detection of BoNT in water samples
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of seven small-scale drinking water purification devices is presented for their capacity to eliminate botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) type B from drinking water. Influent water inoculated with toxic Clostridium botulinum cultures and effluent purified water samples are tested for the presence of BoNT using a standard mouse bioassay and two commercial rapid enzyme immunoassays (EIAs).
