Atropine metabolism by Pseudomonas sp. strain AT3: evidence for nortropine as an intermediate in tropine breakdown and reactions leading to succinate
Article Abstract:
Pseudomonas sp. strain AT3 hydrolyzes atropine to form nortropine, and then 6-hydroxycyclohepta-1,4-dione. The beta-diketone 4,6-dioxoheptanoate cleavage point produces either succinate and acetone or 4-oxopentanoate and acetate. Nitrogen elimination produces 6-hydroxycyclohepta-1,4-dione. The oxidation of 6-hydroxycyclohepta-1,4-dione by NAD+ -specific dehydrogenase produces cyclohepta-1,3,5-trione. The AT3 strain fails to grow with acetone and the compound evaporates into the atmosphere.

Sedolisins, a new class of secreted proteases from Aspergillus fumigatus with endoprotease or tripeptidyl-peptidase activity at acidic pHs
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to provide detailed description of sedolisin proteases secreted by Aspergillus fumigatus and to validate prediction from the A. fumigatus genome. It showed that SedA and the aspartic protease Pep1(35) as endoproteases, together with SedB, SedC, and SedD as exoproteases, constitute a set of proteases that could be used by A. fumigatus to degrade proteins at acidic pHs and to generate assimilable nitrogen sources in decomposing organic matter and composts.

Metabolism of p-cresol by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus
Article Abstract:
The utilization of p-cresol as the sole source of carbon and energy for Aspergillus fumigatus is discussed. Cell extracts from the fungi were subjected to thin-layer chromatography, gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry, monitoring of oxygen consumptions and enzyme and protein assays. The growth of A. fumigatus on p-cresol was demonstrated as two routes were determined converging at the protachetuic acid.
