Benzylfumaric, benzylmaleic, and Z- and E-phenylitaconic acids: synthesis, characterization, and correlation with a metabolite generated by Azoarcus tolulyticus Tol-4 during anaerobic toluene degradation
Article Abstract:
E-Phenylitaconic acid has been isolated as a metabolite produced by Azoarcus tolulyticus Tol-4 along with benzylsuccinic acid during anaerobic degradation of toluene. The new metabolite was identified based on samples of benzylfumaric acid, benzylmaleic acid, E-phenylitaconic acid, Z-phenylitaconic acid and corresponding dimethyl diesters. E-phenylitaconic acid could have major implications for defining the pathway of anaerobic toluene metabolism.

Anaerobic toluene-catabolic pathway in denitrifying thauera aromatica: activation and beta-oxidation of the first intermediate, (R)-(+)-benzylsuccinate
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to determine the mechanism of benzylsuccinate oxidation in a toluene-grown denitrifying bacterial species. Results indicate benzylsuccinate is converted to benzylsuccinyl-CoA, which in turn gets oxidized to benzoyl-CoA and succinyl-CoA in an anaerobic toluene-catabolic pathway.

Transcriptional analysis of the tutE tutFDGH gene cluster from Thauera aromatica strain T1
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe the gene cluster in Thauera aromatica strain T1 that codes for the enzyme benzylsuccinate synthase. This enzyme catalyzes the first step in the breakdown of toluene, which T. aromatica strain T1 can metabolize.
