Beta-Tubulin genes and the basis for benzimidazole sensitivity of the opportunistic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans
Article Abstract:
Analysis of PCR amplification products, genomic and cDNA clones and Southern blots were conducted to understand the benzimidazole-beta-tubulin interaction as well as the molecular biology of Cryptococcus neoformans. Two beta-tubulin genes were identified namely, TUB1 which contains seven introns, and a more divergent TUB2 which has a higher density of introns. A His6 to Gln change in TUB1 from three independently isolated albendazole-resistant mutants suggested that TUB1 product presents the primary benzimidazole target.

Secretion of FK506/FK520 and rapamycin by Streptomyces inhibits the growth of competing Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Cryptococcus neoformans
Article Abstract:
FK506, FK520 and rapamycin, produced by Streptomyces sp., Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. ascomyceticus and Streptomyces hygroscopicus, respectively, were observed to inhibit the growth of competing cells of the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans and and the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Experiments involving yeast and fungal mutants were able to determine the role of FKBP12 in mediating the immunosuppressive and antimicrobial activities of the Streptomyces toxins.

The TOR signaling cascade regulates gene expression in response to nutrients
Article Abstract:
Results show that in yeast cells dephosphorylation of Ure2 phosphoprotein is influenced by nutrient conditions and TOR kinases. Data also indicate that TOR kinases regulate gene expression in a signaling cascade in response to nutrient status of the cells.
