Beta-catenin has Wnt-like activity and mimics the Nieuwkoop signaling center in Xenopus dorsal-ventral patterning
Article Abstract:
Molecular evidence suggests that the protein beta-catenin has a role in axis formation during embryonic patterning. Overexpression of the protein in the vegetal ventral region of early cleavage embryos rescued UV-ventralized embryos and caused a dramatic increase in the rate of aggregation of blastomeres. Although it does not enhance gap junction communication, beta-catenin exhibited a behavior highly similar to those of the Wnt gene family, suggesting that it has a signaling instead of a regulatory role during axis formation.
