Correlation between anammox activity and microscale distribution of nitrite in subtropical mangrove sediment

Article Abstract:

The potential annamox rates in sediments were determined from four locations in a subtropical tidal river system by measuring the porewater profiles of NO(sub x)(super -) (NO(sub 2)(super -) plus NO(sub 3)(super -)) and NO(sub 2)(super -) and the availability of NO(sub 2)(super -) was compared with the potential for anammox activity. The results suggested that denitrification, though using NO(sub 2)(super -) as a substrate also provides a substrate for the anommox process.

Use of an oxygen-insensitive microscale biosensor for methane to measure methane concentration profiles in a rice paddy

Article Abstract:

A microscale biosensor for methane was improved by making it insensitive to oxygen through the addition of an oxygen guard capillary containing heterotrophic bacteria. The bacteria in the oxygen guard's glass capillary consumed oxygen diffusing through the tip membrane, thus preventing it from diffusing into the methane-sensing unit. The improved, oxygen-insensitive biosensor was used in measuring methane concentration profiles in a rice paddy soil.
